Bartholomew, also known as Nathanael, was one of Christ’s disciples. After the crucifixion, Bartholomew preached the gospel in India and Armenia. Tradition suggests he was martyred in Albanopolis, Armenia, that he was flayed alive and crucified, head downward. This sculptural depiction foreshadows his death. Conceived as a garden piece, the client was so pleased, he placed it at the entrance to the church.
